I have gained training and confidence to access books I once wished to read

Naeem SAjid, Management Consultant

Studying with Ustaad Yusaf allowed me to progress my classical Arabic studies greatly. Ustaad helped me patiently to apply grammatical rules and theory whilst walking me through classical text, and ensuring I fully understand the language.
I have gained training and confidence to access books I once wished to read and my time with Ustaadh Yusaf has re-ignited my desire to progress my Arabic studies as a non-native.

Guided Reading Class - Advanced Level

Live Group Class

Ihya 'ulum al-din and Mukhtarat min adab al-'arab

Revival of the Religious Sciences (Imam al-Ghazali) and

Selections of Arabic Literature (Abul Hasan al-Nadwi)

Course Overview

This is a live, group class that helps a student vocalize and translate classical Arabic texts.

Students will vocalize and translate selections from Ghazali's Ihya and Abu al-Hasan al-Nadwi's Mukhtarat min adab al-'arab (Selections of Arabic Literature).  Students will regularly use the Hans Wehr dictionary to look up unfamiliar words.

This is an advanced level class that requires one complete the Certification of Arabic Grammar - Intermediate level, or its equivalent.

This class is weekly and will run continuously through the year.  Students are welcome to join or pause their monthly subscription at any time.

2

Who is this course for and are there prerequisites for attending?

This course benefits students who have completed our Certificate of Ijaza in Arabic Grammar - Intermediate (or its equivalent), and  would like to improve their reading fluency by accurate vocalization and grammatical translation.

This course presupposes prior study of classical Arabic (at least 150 hours) with practice vocalizing and translating unvowelled texts.  It assumes that you are able to conjugate verbs and grammatically analyze nouns and verbs (i.e. you should know the position of a noun in a sentence).  Students should be able to use a root-based dictionary like the Hans Wehr dictionary.

About the Text

Imam Ghazali's Ihya 'ulum al-din is a masterpiece in Islamic spirituality.  It is masterfully written and an extremely practical work on diagnosing and improving oneself.

Abul Hasan al-Nadwi's Mukhtarat is a compilation of some of the most eloquent pieces of literature in the Arab and Muslim literary corpus, from the beginning of Islam to the 20th century.

Studying with Grammica Institute has allowed me to take my Arabic reading to the next level.

Bilal Chaudry,Project Manager

Studying with Grammica Institute has allowed me to take my Arabic reading to the next level. The small class sizes, one to one attention, and course structure are perfectly suited to my needs as a student with high ambitions yet many other commitments. The years of experience and deep knowledge of the teacher is evident in his ability to sense the specific requirements of each student. After just a few lessons I felt more confident in applying the rules of grammar and morphology I had already learnt, and in translating texts which are over a thousand years old! I would highly recommend Grammica Institute to both aspiring Arabic students as well as those with some experience, who now want to take things further.

About the Instructor

Ustadh Yusaf Bhatti

Ustadh Yusaf brings over 10,000 hours of Arabic instructional experience from having taught over 700 students from around the world. He combines this wealth of live practical expertise with fluency in English (BSc, Indiana University) and a deep understanding of the modern student’s need for fast, actionable results. Having taught at Qasid Institute in Amman, Jordan, he opened the world of classical texts, grammar treatises, and Quranic exegesis to complete newcomers for over 15 years.

Ustadh Yusaf Aziz Bhatti

over a decade of classroom experience raising non-native Arabic speakers from beginner to advanced grammarian

Atif R. Khan

Ustadh Yusaf combines several rarified elements of classical Arabic grammar instruction in a single teacher: a spiritual grasp of the Quran; mastery of Arabic grammar and usage at the exegetical level; native command of English grammar and usage at the university level; over a decade of classroom experience raising non-native Arabic speakers from beginner to advanced grammarian; and the kind of affability and patience needed with a student that makes a good teacher great. Only Ustadh Yusaf comes to mind as combining all five of these critical attributes in a single teacher.

FAQ:

Which texts will I read?

We will alternate between the Ihya and Mukhtarat.  The student begins with the Mukhtarat and the next month with the Ihya.  This keeps the reading fresh as the selections from the Mukhtarat are more diverse. The texts are available on the course page once the student registers.

Can I pause or cancel my subscription whenever I want?

Yes.  There is no commitment past the first 3 months.

How often do you meet?  What happens if I can't make the lesson?

We meet every Tuesday.  Every session is recording and uploaded to your course page for review.

I am not at this level, can I still sign up?

Yes.  Although this class is geared towards students who have done Intermediate Arabic, students in the process of getting their Essentials or Intermediate certificates are welcome to attend.

Do you offer refunds?

We complete registration months in advance so are unable to offer refunds for this class.  However, you can always pause your subscription for any reason whenever you want and rejoin without paying the initial registration fee.
