If you have studied i'rab and grammar to an intermediate level i.e. topics covered in our Certificate of Ijaza in Arabic Grammar — Intermediate course (or its equivalent) and now want to apply it to analyzing the language of the Quran, then this class is for you.

This class is not for beginners but for intermediate to advanced students.

One of the fruits of studying Arabic grammar to a higher level is the opportunity to read the words of the scholars of exegesis (mufassirin lit. explainers).

I find this activity exciting because it uncovers jewels in the Quran that one can only get when appreciating the linguistic beauty of the language itself. This is the peak of the Muslim scholarly tradition and this is why I studied Arabic.

In this course you will learn how to go about analyzing the Quran through a linguistic lens so you can further understand the meaning. We do this by starting off with a translation, a simple tafsir, and then move onto more in-depth tafsir and i'rab analysis.

We do this in live sessions in which you can ask your questions. For those interested in a certificate of completion, a comprehension test must be taken.

This short course is not meant to make you into mufassirin but to give you an glimpse into the world of tafsir and the great Muslim scholarly tradition.

Tafsir Abi Su'ud

In this course, you 5-8 tafsirs While that is not all of tafsir, the goal is to expose you to the authors and titles of tafsir works. You will understand how to go about analyzing a verse in 10 sessions.

Does this class have any prerequisites?

Yes. As this class is for intermediate to advanced learners, students should be familiar with the concepts covered in our Certificate of Ijaza in Arabic Grammar – Intermediate course. If you are familiar with this material and want to move forward with your learning then you’ve come to the right place. We will get you to analyze verses in 10 sessions. What are the timings and dates of the class?

Wednesday 8 AM EST. We begin February 21st and end May 15th. If you miss a class, you can always access the recordings.

What does this course include?

The course consists of 10 sessions of 50 instructional minutes each. Each of these live sessions is recorded for your review.

What are the next steps after I receive my certificate?

We recommend you consolidate the material by continuing your studies in Arabic grammar. You can do this by taking our weekly Advanced Guided Reading course or other short courses we offer through the year.

I have not completed the recommended hours of formal study but am willing to work hard. Can I take this course?

Although this is an advanced level course, it's highly enjoyable to see the grammar one has studied come to life when reading tafsir. The language is dense and requires unpacking, which we will do as we cross-reference a few tafsirs.

**Prerequisites include the following (please check with us if you are unsure):

formal study of Arabic of 3 years or 250 hours (one should be familiar with the concepts in Matn al-Ajrummiyya and our Certificate of Ijaza in Arabic Grammar — Intermediate course)
ability to read unvocalized Arabic at the intermedaite level (equivalent to Abul Hasan al-Nadwi's Mukhtarat min adab al-'arab)
Rich vocabulary of nouns and verbs, and
familiarity with conjugating irregular verbs and the 10 Forms table.
